Veteran actor Vikrant Massey gave details about his experiences and struggles before achieving his current success level. He talked candidly about his struggle with the entertainment industry and how he did not have the same advantages and support that many actors have. Instead, Massey’s determination and perseverance played a major role in his success.
Massey started working in the entertainment business at the young age of 16. Most teenagers spend their time enjoying life or preparing for their futures; Massey was faced with the reality of having to work long hours and sacrifice much of his time. During this time, he worked 16 hours daily to pay for his school’s tuition while staying in a small apartment that he shared with other actors who were struggling like him.
He often relied on eating Parle-G Biscuits and drinking water when he could afford nothing else. He was also supporting himself while working as a barista and, at the same time, he worked for a dance company as a dance instructor. Because of all of the sacrifices he made while learning to act, he has become a successful actor today. In his words, “No one chooses to do this.” Massey was very honest in sharing the difficulties he experienced and how he persevered through them to find a way to success during his early years.
Early Steps into Acting and Initial Setbacks
Massey’s early goal of being a performer was impacted by financial difficulties; his first television experience came shortly thereafter. At the age of 19, Massey shot his first commercial. His television career started on a bad note when the program he worked so hard on for 8 months did not get the proper airtime and he only received half of what was scheduled for payment; this experience was a very early lesson for Massey on how unpredictable the industry is.
However, Massey did not let this stop him; he continued to search for opportunities to be seen on television. His first major success was as an actor in the series Balika Vadhu and Qubool Hai. While his rise from television to film roles has not been without difficulties, there are also aspects of his journey from television to film that are quite different. In past interviews, Massey discussed how he has dealt with being pushed aside due to his background and has been underestimated because of it, providing insight into the dynamics between insiders and outsiders within Bollywood.

Navigating Bollywood’s Insider-Outsider Landscape
Massey has been able to break into the Bollywood film industry, which is regarded as the largest and most significant cultural and business entity in India. He was able to create his own identity and establish his position within the industry without any familial connections. At a recent panel discussion, Massey questioned the ongoing discussions concerning the “insider/outsider” dichotomy that have plagued the industry and called the debate pointless. According to Massey, whether or not you were born into a film family is inconsequential; what determines your ability to succeed over the long term is your ability to succeed on the basis of merit and hard work. If you are an outsider, you must have tenacity and an unwavering focus to survive.
Massey’s transition from television to film was not an overnight success. Although the release of Lootera in 2013 was considered a breakthrough for Massey, he continued to work diligently on projects while developing his name and reputation as an actor. By refusing to accept repetitive roles, Massey gradually became one of the most respected actors in modern day Bollywood.

Rejections, Reinventions, and Staying True to Self
Massey spoke openly about how uncomfortable he was with the industry’s aggressive PR tactics and the surface-level promotion of one’s self through pricey clothing and attending high-profile events when he did a podcast. After trying out some PR tactics and spending money on fancy clothes, Massey determined that he wasn’t interested in that type of branding as it contradicted his belief system as an artist and who he was at his core. He then moved away from that type of branding and put more focus on what is real and authentic.
This theme continues to resonate with his followers and those writing about him. Massey has received numerous awards and accolades as the Best Actor of the Year for his work in 12th Fail, but he continues to speak about the need for honest storytelling and real performances rather than “glitz.”

Support Systems and Personal Growth
Massey achieved success with the help of supportive individuals around him. He credits those individuals, including his wife Sheetal Thakur, for being a source of emotional and financial support throughout his career during difficult times when he did not know if he would find success or not.
Even though Massey has had many ups and downs in his life, his journey is one of perseverance. He has taken his past and current struggles and turned them into something that has allowed him to gain both artistic credibility and recognition in the mainstream music industry. This story serves as an example to many young artists facing similar challenges in what is perceived as a privileged environment.
