Alexandr Wang is Meta’s new chief AI officer, appointed in 2025 to lead the Meta Superintelligence Labs. Born in New Mexico to Chinese scientists, Wang has been passionate about computer programming and math since childhood.
Wang was only 17 when he got his first full-time engineering job at Addepar. Later, Wang also joined popular question-and-answer site Quora as a software programmer. Alexandr also joined MIT to study machine learning before dropping out to build his first company.

Wang co-founded Scale AI, an artificial intelligence company, in 2016 to help companies put their raw data to work for machine learning and AI. He served as the CEO for Scale AI until the breakthrough came. It was June 2025 when Mark Zuckerberg acquired 49% of Scale AI with a deal of $14 billion. That’s how Wang became Meta’s new chief AI officer.
Meta’s Acquisition of Scale AI
The Scale AI acquisition is Meta’s biggest challenge in the AI race. In simple words, it’s a huge challenge for both Meta and Alexandr Wang to train large language models. Things are more difficult when a competitor like OpenAI is leading the global artificial intelligence market. Besides that, Meta’s Llama 4 performed poorly in coding tasks.
Scale AI has a global workforce of contractors across the Philippines, Kenya, and Venezuela. Scale AI has different integrated platform capabilities, combining model evaluation, data labeling, and synthetic data generation. The Meta investment also created a market consolidation for Scale AI, as most clients seek alternatives.
Alexandr Wang is leading Meta’s superintelligence lab, which focuses on developing artificial general intelligence. Besides that, Wang’s team of 50 researchers also joined Meta’s existing AI workforce, as the company is ready to enhance its AI infrastructure. The integration also provides technical advantages to Meta, like accessing Scale AI’s government contracts.
