4 Passengers Arrested on Suspicion of Drug Smuggling by AIU in Mumbai Airport. On Friday, Artificial Intelligence Unit (AIU) personnel detained four international airline passengers at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport for possible involvement in a drug smuggling operation.
AIU Rules Out Random Selection
The four detainees were selected from passengers arriving via international flights based solely on AIU’s surveillance and profiling capabilities, not random selection process.
AIU officials believe that the detainees’ travel patterns and behaviors were suspicious, leading AIU to flag them for further investigation even though they had arrived via other international flights.
Four detainees were found to have narcotics on them following interviews with the AU officers, as well as checks of their baggage. The specific types and total amounts of the narcotics that were seized have not yet been disclosed, but have been estimated to be valued significantly on the street.

Ongoing Investigation of Drug Trafficking
Afghanistan has been working with the AIU on an ongoing investigation into drug trafficking and investigators are confident that these detainees are employees of a massive drug trafficking organization.
Initial investigative findings indicate that drug traffickers have made it almost impossible for the AIU to detect contraband at routine inspections at vet airports due to their packaging and concealment.
The occurrence of various methods of smuggling narcotics has raised concerns about the evolution of smuggling methods used by drug traffickers.

They are currently being questioned in order to gather additional information regarding the source and intended destination of the drugs. The authorities indicated that additional arrests may occur as the investigation progresses.

Increased Vigilance at Airports
This incident demonstrates the increasing difficulty of preventing drug smuggling via international airports. The AIU and customs officials are now conducting increased levels of surveillance and utilizing advanced profiling techniques to combat such activities.
Officials reiterated that they remain committed to preventing illegal narcotics trafficking and enforcing the law in the strongest manner possible.
Ongoing Crackdown
The most recent arrests are part of an ongoing crackdown against drug smuggling at India’s largest airports. Authorities have been reporting an increase in the number of drug smuggling incidents recently and are therefore enhancing their security measures and providing more coordinated intelligence. As the investigation continues, additional updates will be provided.
