Apple and Microsoft have announced significant price increases across several of their flagship products, attributing the changes to rapidly rising memory chip costs linked to the expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure. The increases affect popular Mac, iPad, and Xbox models, highlighting growing pressure on the consumer electronics industry from the ongoing components shortage.
Apple Raises Prices Across Mac and iPad Lineup
Apple introduced widespread price increases on Thursday, impacting numerous Mac and iPad products. Several of the company’s most popular devices now cost at least 20 percent more than before.
The base version of the MacBook Air now sells in the United States for $1,299, compared with its previous price of $1,099. Meanwhile, the entry-level MacBook Pro increased from $1,699 to $1,999.
Among tablets, the iPad Air’s starting price climbed from $599 to $749. The iPad Pro also became more expensive, rising from $999 to $1,199.
Apple’s budget-focused MacBook Neo now carries a price tag of $699, up from $599.
Mac Studio Records Largest Increase
The most substantial adjustment was applied to the Mac Studio M3 Ultra desktop computer. Its price jumped from $3,999 to $5,299, representing the steepest increase among Apple’s products.
According to Apple, the company had previously absorbed higher component costs but could no longer continue doing so.
An Apple spokesperson said in a statement:
“The rapid expansion of AI data centres has created an extraordinary surge in demand for memory and storage.”
The spokesperson added:
“We have never seen a component price increase this much, this quickly.”
Apple also stated that it had shielded customers from increasing chip expenses until now but had “reached a point where we need to begin raising prices”.

Market Reaction Follows Price Announcement
Following the announcement, Apple’s stock fell by more than 6 percent.
The decline marked the company’s sharpest share-price drop since US President Donald Trump’s announcement of his “liberation day” tariffs in April last year.

Analysts Expect Impact on Consumer Demand
Concerns Over MacBook Neo Pricing
Trevor Long, a consumer technology analyst and commentator based in Australia, believes the higher prices could influence purchasing decisions.
Discussing the MacBook Neo, Long told Al Jazeera:
“Some products, like their newest product, the MacBook Neo, while excellent as products, were also outstanding because of price.”
He continued:
“This hits that hard. They are still a decent deal but push closer to other competitive product prices as well.”
Attention Turns to Future iPhone Pricing
Long also suggested that the coming year may be difficult for major technology companies, including Apple.
Speaking about Apple’s future product strategy, he said:
“The key thing will be the next iPhone and how close they can price it to the last one.”
He further added:
“I’d expect a $50-150 price rise across the range, depending on models.”
Microsoft Raises Xbox Prices Amid Component Crisis
Microsoft has also moved to increase prices, pointing to the same challenges affecting the broader technology sector.
The company confirmed that the prices of the 512 GB and 1 TB versions of its Xbox gaming console would rise by $100 and $150, respectively.
In a statement, Microsoft said:
“We hoped another price increase would not be necessary, and we have spent the last several months working with suppliers on options.”
Memory and Storage Costs Continue to Climb
The company reported that storage and memory expenses have risen sharply.
Microsoft stated:
“Unfortunately, console storage and memory prices have increased by more than 2.5x and we expect another doubling by the fall of 2027,”
The Redmond, Washington-based technology company also highlighted the broader industry impact, saying:
“The entire consumer electronics industry is struggling with the current components crisis, but the effects are particularly hard on consoles.”
AI Infrastructure Driving Component Demand
Both Apple and Microsoft pointed to growing demand for memory and storage components as AI development accelerates.
The rapid expansion of AI data centres has increased competition for memory chips, driving up costs for technology manufacturers and contributing to higher prices for consumers purchasing computers, tablets, and gaming consoles.
Conclusion
Apple and Microsoft have introduced substantial price increases across key product categories as escalating memory chip costs continue to pressure manufacturers. With AI data centres fueling unprecedented demand for memory and storage components, industry observers expect pricing challenges to remain a major issue for consumer electronics companies in the months ahead.
