A tragic accident in Mumbai’s Chembur area on Tuesday claimed the life of an 11-year-old student when a tree fell onto a school bus carrying 18 children. Five other students were taken to hospital for treatment, with one reported to be in critical condition.
Authorities have launched an assessment into the circumstances surrounding the tree collapse, while emergency teams carried out rescue operations at the scene.
Tree Falls on School Bus in Chembur
The incident occurred at around 2:50 pm in the Tilak Nagar locality of Chembur when a tree suddenly collapsed onto a school bus belonging to Universal School, officials said.
According to Mumbai Police, the tree fell on the bus at approximately 2:50 pm. Rescue personnel quickly reached the location after receiving information about the accident.
Initial reports suggested that several children had become trapped inside the vehicle following the impact.
Student Dies, Five Others Receive Medical Treatment
DCP Sameer Shaikh of Zone 6 said the deceased student was identified as Vihan Shrivastav, aged 11. He was declared brought dead after being taken to the hospital.
The bus was carrying 18 students at the time of the incident. Officials said 12 of the children were safely evacuated from the vehicle.
Five students were admitted to Zen Hospital for treatment. Of those injured, four children sustained minor injuries and are in stable condition. The fifth student remains critically injured and is undergoing treatment.
Rescue Efforts Launched Immediately
Students trapped inside the bus were rescued by the vehicle’s conductor along with local residents who assisted in the operation.
Emergency response teams arrived at the site soon after the accident. A crane was deployed to remove the fallen tree and support rescue efforts.

Images from the scene showed a section of the bus severely damaged after being crushed by the fallen tree, while emergency responders and officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) worked to remove debris and secure the area.
