A powerful earthquake originating in Afghanistan was felt across large parts of North India on Saturday evening, including Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir. The quake, measured at 6.2 magnitude, also impacted areas in Afghanistan and Pakistan, prompting residents in several locations to move outdoors as the tremors spread across the region.
6.2 Magnitude Quake Originates in Afghanistan
The National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the Government of India’s nodal agency for earthquake monitoring, reported that the earthquake measured 6.2 on the Richter Scale and was centered in Afghanistan.
Sharing details on X, the agency stated:
“EQ of M: 6.2, On: 27/06/2026 19:04:51 IST, Lat: 36.442 N, Long: 70.672 E, Depth: 215 Km, Location: Afghanistan,”
Location and Depth of the Earthquake
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake’s epicentre was located 43 kilometres south of Jurm in northeastern Afghanistan.
The quake occurred at a depth of 215 kilometres beneath the surface.

Tremors Felt Across Northern India
Residents in Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, and several other northern states experienced noticeable shaking on Saturday evening.
In parts of the national capital, the tremors led to panic, with people leaving their homes and office buildings and gathering outdoors as a precaution.

Earthquake Comes Days After Deadly Venezuela Disaster
The Afghanistan earthquake occurred only days after two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela.
The twin earthquakes hit within a minute of each other on Wednesday evening, causing widespread destruction and flattening buildings in the South American nation.
According to reports, 920 people were killed and thousands more were injured in the disaster.
United Nations aid chief Tom Fletcher stated that more than 50,000 people remained missing following the earthquakes.
