Actor Akshay Kumar’s highly anticipated action comedy film “Singh is Bliing” is receiving an enormous response at the box office. The Prabhudheva directorial has surpassed the Rs.50 crore mark in just three days since its release on Friday.
The film, which collected Rs.20.67 crore on its opening day itself, managed to enthrall the audience over the weekend where it collected Rs.14.50 crore on Saturday and Rs.19.27 crore on Sunday, taking its total to Rs.54.44 crore. It is also Akshay’s highest weekend collection at the box office so far, read a statement.
The team has been loving the support it has been getting from fans all over the world. “Singh is Bliing” also stars Amy Jackson, Lara Dutta and Kay Kay Menon.
‘Singh is Bliing’ stars Akshay Kumar in lead along with Amy Jackson and is a follow-up to the tremendously popular ‘Singh Is Kinng’ in which Katrina Kaif was cast opposite Akshay. But apart from a different heroine, ‘Singh Is Bliing’ is as garish, and as ‘Punjabi’ as its predecessor, including the execrable melodrama. The excuse being, if it’s not broken, why fix it. So, if ‘Kinng’ delivered a hit, Bliing’ will too if the formula is more or less similar. Most likely smart thinking at the outset to churn out a super-hit.
The storyline is that of a bumbling Punjabi boy who has a heart of gold. Into the pot is added a beautiful girl, her father, and a villain. The resultant churn has us travelling from the good old Punjab to fancy-free Goa, with a a dash of Romania thrown in. While the first half of the film is hilarious to the core loaded with pranks and funny episodes, the film’s second half, though slow, is high on emotions and drama. Though the film has a weak storyline which gets clearer only in the second half, it’s the funny antics of Akshay Kumar and his side-kicks that keep you rolling in your seat with laughter. Will the girl (Amy) protect her family, does she really love Raftaar Singh (Akshay), will Raftaar manage to win the love of his life, will his father ever be proud of him… forms the rest of the story.
Director Prabhu Deva’s last film at the box-office was Action Jackson, which did not fare well at the box-office. With ‘Singh Is Bliing’ however, he seems to have hit the right chord for a successful box office collections formula. Prabhu has packaged everything that is needed in a slapstick comedy aimed at the masses. Be it the funny one liners, religious sentiment, emotion, action and more, ‘Singh Is Bliing’ has it all.
Akshay Kumar steals the show from the first frame as he gets into the skin of his character perfectly well. One can’t imagine any other actor playing the role of Raftaar Singh with Akshay’s style and outstanding comic timing. Walking shoulder to shoulder with him, is the surprise package (read ‘revelation’) of the film: Amy Jackson. Even though she hardly has any Hindi dialogue in the film, she manages to play the Bollywood lead actress with full conviction. Amy has a number of action scenes in the film, in which she excels. Lara Dutta, who features mainly in the first half, surprises with her very strong comic timing. Kay Kay Menon is decent as an evil but funny villain.
On the whole, ‘Singh Is Bliing’ is a slapstick comedy that offers paisa-vasool entertainment. Surely a ‘must-watch’ for this long weekend.
